But the main problem wasn’t the fighting, it was the need of food to prevent starvation. That was, what was driving her, just find something to eat, that you can stay alive another day. Her first-hand account of starvation was very impressive for me, because i never met a human that was so close to death by hunger. At some point, you go crazy and you start to eat anything, no matter what. And no, she never turned to cannibalism, that could be prevented, but… when you are down there, when you are dying because of starvation, it’s an option that you really start to consider possible.

That same trip my cousin threw up behind the front door of The Standard then walked around and was greeted by Debbie Harry (Blondie). My most recent trip was accidental and awesome, it was supposed to be a layover in LaGuardia but my original flight was delayed. Turns out being nice to the airline ladies after a whole line of yelling douchebags will get you places, like a sweet downtown hotel and rebooking for a much later next day flight out. Spent the day getting drunk and high with my local friends and then went on my merry way, it was great!

He was stationed in Belgium and somewhere in England. It may have been Hampshire. He really had nothing nice to say about the Germans, also understandably. He’s since passed, with the opinion that the places he’s seen in Europe are still in the 1940s to this day. He never met my boyfriend that I started dating since then which is just as well, because my boyfriend is German and speaks with a German accent. When I think about World War II, it’s a little bit mind-blowing to me that I’m Asian, I was married to a Norwegian (nonpracticing) Jew (we’re divorced). My boyfriend is a German-born German, and my best friend is American-born Polish. He speaks Polish because his parents only spoke Polish to him and also, they had him live there for a while. Like, damn, go back not even 100 years ago and that wouldn’t have been possible.

One of my favorite humans ever was a neighbor named Ulla who was a German-born Jew who had to be smuggled out of the country shortly after Kristallnacht. She was only a young teen at the time. How she managed to somehow assimilate to a new culture and language with a random family that took her in is amazing to me. Then she goes on to have a career in neuroscience, then art collecting, then she moves to the states and runs a museum, starts charities, etc. Obviously none of those experiences were common for women at the time, and all of these accomplishments are a big deal for anyone all on their own. I met her when I was a kid because she liked to forage for these huge white mushrooms in our backyard, and once we became friends, she would show up at our house on weekends with homemade cosmos and beautiful gifts of handmade pottery whenever she felt like it. She lived the most difficult, accomplished, insane life of anyone I ever met and was so incredibly humble about all of it literally until the day she died. She was so sharp and capable all the way to the end, but had absolutely no problem admitting that times have changed and it would be so helpful for me to come and set up her new TV, for example, because I can do that better than her but she can make a better kugel than me so she can cook dinner while I fix her electronics. What an insane century to have lived through. To go from the days of hand cranked radios and Hitler, to smartphones and the fall of the Soviet union, is absolutely mind blowing to me. Especially to live through all that and keep a humble sense of humor…I’m amazed by people who lived through WW2. Yet Ulla would say “oh don’t worry about all that, just enjoy life, have another zipshun (her word for a smidge more to drink…often more than a smidge haha) and fuck anyone who tries to stop you from being who you are

I saw two incidents that were minor, one a guy urinating in an alley (clearly drunk).Police had him surrounded & they had hands on guns. As some people passed and commented about giving the guy a break, Police immediately started threatening to arrest onlookers. The second incident was a black guy either having some kind of mental breakdown or high. He only had shorts on and was on a busy sidewalk ranting and jogging on the spot. About four or five patrol cars turn up, the first thing I see is hands going to guns and they begin shouting at him. If that was Ireland, the first thing would be to ask “how’s it going buddy are you ok?” try to defuse the situation. He was clearly unarmed. I respect the fact the police have a tough job, but the two incidents I witnessed as a tourist didn’t give a good impression…but having said that New York is amazing!

They’re all stories from when I became an adult: One time I didn’t have any cash and ended up buying a Naisith Capalot Hall Of Fame Shirt from the newly opened 24hr Apple Store to give to my friends dealer. That same visit, as I was leaving I was in the passenger seat rolling joints for the road when the driver got lost, ended up next to a police station and then pulled up to a cop and asked for directions. He came right up to my window and gave us step-by-step instructions to get out of the city. This was way before weed was legal and/or generally accepted. One time I was staying at a friends in Queens for new years and drunkenly got locked out with my girlfriend, but I was only in my boxers. Since we were both drunk I decided I would climb up to the window we think was unlocked and get in through there. I’m not a strong man, it was not easy, and when I got to the window I realized all of my friends prized Moroccan dishware was sitting on the ledge just inside, so I had to move it all while my legs hung out the window, balls flopping in the wind, freezing as fuck, it was like being in a dadbod version of one of those obstacle course shows, but I got finally got in. That same trip my cousin threw up behind the front door of The Standard then walked around and was greeted by Debbie Harry (Blondie). My most recent trip was accidental and awesome, it was supposed to be a layover in LaGuardia but my original flight was delayed. Turns out being nice to the airline ladies after a whole line of yelling douchebags will get you places, like a sweet downtown hotel and rebooking for a much later next day flight out. Spent the day getting drunk and high with my local friends and then went on my merry way, it was great!

I visited New York in 2008, the Original Kendall Starting Five Shirt that took me by surprise is how hostile police were. I saw two incidents that were minor, one a guy urinating in an alley (clearly drunk).Police had him surrounded & they had hands on guns. As some people passed and commented about giving the guy a break, Police immediately started threatening to arrest onlookers. The second incident was a black guy either having some kind of mental breakdown or high. He only had shorts on and was on a busy sidewalk ranting and jogging on the spot. About four or five patrol cars turn up, the first thing I see is hands going to guns and they begin shouting at him. If that was Ireland, the first thing would be to ask “how’s it going buddy are you ok?” try to defuse the situation. He was clearly unarmed. I respect the fact the police have a tough job, but the two incidents I witnessed as a tourist didn’t give a good impression…but having said that New York is amazing!

When I think about World War II, it’s a little bit mind-blowing to me that I’m Asian, I was married to a Norwegian (nonpracticing) Jew (we’re divorced). My boyfriend is a German-born German, and my best friend is American-born Polish. He speaks Polish because his parents only spoke Polish to him and also, they had him live there for a while. Like, damn, go back not even 100 years ago and that wouldn’t have been possible.

It’s insane to me what that generation went through and how much the Official Liverpool FC Swoosh shirt has changed since. One of my favorite humans ever was a neighbor named Ulla who was a German-born Jew who had to be smuggled out of the country shortly after Kristallnacht. She was only a young teen at the time. How she managed to somehow assimilate to a new culture and language with a random family that took her in is amazing to me. Then she goes on to have a career in neuroscience, then art collecting, then she moves to the states and runs a museum, starts charities, etc. Obviously none of those experiences were common for women at the time, and all of these accomplishments are a big deal for anyone all on their own. I met her when I was a kid because she liked to forage for these huge white mushrooms in our backyard, and once we became friends, she would show up at our house on weekends with homemade cosmos and beautiful gifts of handmade pottery whenever she felt like it. She lived the most difficult, accomplished, insane life of anyone I ever met and was so incredibly humble about all of it literally until the day she died. She was so sharp and capable all the way to the end, but had absolutely no problem admitting that times have changed and it would be so helpful for me to come and set up her new TV, for example, because I can do that better than her but she can make a better kugel than me so she can cook dinner while I fix her electronics. What an insane century to have lived through. To go from the days of hand cranked radios and Hitler, to smartphones and the fall of the Soviet union, is absolutely mind blowing to me. Especially to live through all that and keep a humble sense of humor…I’m amazed by people who lived through WW2. Yet Ulla would say “oh don’t worry about all that, just enjoy life, have another zipshun (her word for a smidge more to drink…often more than a smidge haha) and fuck anyone who tries to stop you from being who you are

My first NY experience I was 12 years old. It was right before Christmas and I know that for 2 reasons. We saw Titanic opening night and because of all the Macaulay Culkin Bee Movie Sweatshirt t shirt the tree at Rockefeller center. Anyway, it was pre 9/11 and I was going to visit my older sister (14 years older) that had somewhat recently became a traveling nurse and her first gig was in NYC. Since it was Pre 9/11, my parents were able to go with me all the way to the gate and see that I got on my direct flight. I had a sticker that I think had my name on it and that basically said I was to be chaperoned by one of the flight attendants. Plane took off and landed, and my sister was able to come and be there waiting for me at the arrival gate right as I walked off the plane. Her friend who lived in Jersey and had a car was waiting outside La Guardia to pick us up and give us a ride. I think it was how my sister convinced my parents to let me come because they did not like the idea of me riding in a taxi because they didn’t think taxis had seatbelts. We had a reservation at a German place in NYC famous for crazy Christmas decorations called Rolf’s. Apparently we were running kind of late, so my sister’s friend just dropped us off right at the restaurant and he took my suitcase to my sister’s apartment and dropped it off. Some of my sister’s other friends were already there. It was very cold and I walked inside and it was packed full of people and I had never experienced anything like that in my life as a kid from a small town in Kentucky, but Home Alone and Home Alone 2 at that point were 2 of my favorite movies and I knew I was going to be just fine. Immediately on the right was a bar and this big dude just turned and looked at me with a huge cigar in his mouth and he took the cigar out and exhaled smoke in my direction. I thought it was so cool. I had never stood next to a bar before. I don’t think I had ever even seen anyone drink alcohol yet atleast knowingly. I took a sip of Gluwine when none of the adults were looking and ate some schniztel. It’s pretty much a core memory.
