The people of village find him at the road of his village but most interesting thing is he was not so far from his home. I heard this story from my dad and now he is dead to, he died 10 years ago..

It used to be common in English writing to use what was called the 2020 Stink Stank Stunk Funny Christmas Costumes shirt where the use of male pronouns was supposed to cover everyone. For example, years back you might read, “The first grader should be ready for his first day at school, bring his books, pencils, and paper.” Nowadays, you would be highly unlikely to see that. You might instead see use of “his or her” or pluralization like “First graders should be ready for their first day at school, bringing their books, pencils, and paper.” Does the change matter? Yes, I recall (but do not have handy) that generic masculine, when read by young girls, did lead to at least some young girls interpreting the language to mean they were not included. The military is an interesting case in point. Some American branches use terms that don’t refer to gender: sailor (Navy), marine (Marines), and soldier (Army). But the Air Force (at least as I heard in 2015) uses the term airman whether a pilot is man or woman.

Steven, Katie, and others have some great examples of how terms have morphed to be gender neutral. One I didn’t see below was the 2020 Stink Stank Stunk Funny Christmas Costumes shirt from say “manning a table at an event” to “staffing a table at an event” — things like that. Another was a shift I saw during my career from “chairman” → “chairman/chairwoman” → simply “chair.” I have seen some people go off the rails on faulty analyses of gender in words. At one point for example, there was a movement among some to ban “history” (“his-story”) and replace it with “herstory.” On the one hand, “histor” in Greek may have once meant (maybe still does?) a wise man or judge. But the ultimate root in Proto-Indo-European seems to go back to seeing or wisdom. The main point though, is whether the typical English speaker interprets “history” as being limited to men’s stories? In contrast, I think many English speakers, me included, will hear “mailman” or “fireman” as referring to a male, and in our American values we do not want to exclude anyone from a profession whose duties they can certainly perform.
